CENTRE FOR ONCOPATHOLOGY

Centre for Oncopathology (CoP)

Leadership & Collaborative Impact

The WHO National Health Profile highlights a severe shortage of trained healthcare professionals, particularly cancer-specialised pathologists, in India.

The Tata Cancer Care Foundation established the Centre for Oncopathology (CoP) in Mumbai as a non-profit initiative to address the demand-supply gap in cancer pathology expertise. The foundation also ensures high-quality cancer diagnostic services nationwide.

COP was envisioned and led by the Late Dr Anita Borges, a renowned oncopathologist and former Professor & Head of Surgical Pathology at Tata Memorial Hospital. Her legacy lives on through COP’s work and a dedicated team of specialists, including Dr Sumeet Gujral, Dr Vinita Pant, Dr Shilpa Prabhudesai and Dr Vinita Pandey.

Dr Anita Borges - A Life That Trained a Generation

Dr Anita Borges was among India’s most respected oncopathologists, widely trusted for her diagnostic clarity in complex cancer cases, and for a rare integrity that became a culture around her. She envisioned and led COP in Mumbai, shaping a standard where quality was never a checkbox, but the most patient-first decision, every single day. She taught the way she practised: with clarity, courage, and a fierce insistence on making things make sense.

Dr Borges served as a former Professor & Head of Surgical Pathology at Tata Memorial Hospital, Former VP (Asia) of the International Academy of Pathology, and served on the NABL Board. She was also Vice Chairperson of the Indian Cancer Society, contributing to the organisation’s mission with leadership and deep commitment to cancer care. Dr Borges passed away on 18 September 2025 while doing what she loved most, teaching. Her legacy lives on in the many doctors she mentored and the standards she set for oncopathology.
