Cancer Incidence in Chandrapur

Chandrapur, situated in the catchment of Nagpur city, has the second highest incidence of cancer in the state (89 cases per lakh population). Experts believe that this number is grossly underestimated given that a large number of cases do not enter the formal healthcare system for diagnosis and treatment. Prevalent cancer registries and associated systems/ processes are not geared to capture all the cases of the disease.

To meet the immediate needs of the approximately 35-lakh population in the catchment area and improve cancer-related indicators and outcomes, Chandrapur Cancer Care Foundation (CCCF), a Section 8 company was incorporated under the Companies Act, 2013. The company has representation from the Government of Maharashtra, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and Tata Trusts.

About the Hospital

CCCF is setting up a comprehensive cancer centre in the Government Medical College and Hospital premises, Chandrapur. This cancer centre will be a 140-bed facility with approximately 51 inpatient beds, 46 day-care beds, 20 ICU/HDU beds, and 23 recovery/ emergency rooms (ER) beds. It will focus on prevention, awareness, screening, early detection, treatment and palliative care. It will have the latest medical equipment for radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and other services to provide high-quality care closer to home, thus helping to reduce patients’ out-of-pocket expenses.

The state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facility at the Chandrapur hospital will be supplemented by training current healthcare professionals and designing specialised fellowship and certificate programmes to strengthen the oncology workforce. This will ensure uniform, patient-centric delivery.

The Cancer Care Foundation will also work with the National Health Mission to activate the NCD (non-communicable disease) screening programme based on Government of India guidelines.
